As a hen gathers Her chicks

2022

Watercolor, gouache, and metallic ink

The image of God gathering us as chicks (as referenced in Matthew 23:37, Luke 13:34, 3 Nephi 10:4) has been something I've ruminated on as of late. Those scriptures were the inspiration and catalyst for this piece. The inspiration came to me suddenly while I was reading and grieving another refugee situation with the onset of war in Ukraine. As I reflected on the drastic influx of refugees over the last ten years, the majority of them coming from five wartorn countries, I saw this composition come to mind. It was an image that powerfully conveyed what I know best about God and their love. I know that God the Mother, Father, and Son are aware of our needs and that each are with us as we walk through the challenges of this life. I know that Mother God loves Her children and is present for each of us, shielding and comforting us as a hen to her chicks, as we seek Her. These feelings and understandings is one I felt compelled to create and share with others.
